a really quick test post

Because I need to see what:

This is all due to my being crap at stylesheets. Apologies to any readers for whom these test messages are becoming a burden, especially any blinkingline readers who are already sick of these inept tech posts. Thanks for your patience, I promise this is 95% likely to be the last post of this nature.

Now, many moons later, I’m editing this post to see what exactly is broken with the image uploading. Hopefully this won’t get re-sent to your RSS feed as a result. Also, I have no idea how to fix the thing that is broken. Which is very, very sad, as having an image uploader is a damn fine thing to have, and it seems I don’t actually have one now. Sigh.

Wait a minute, I think I found the tiny bit of code that was funky. Does this image work?

YES IT DOES. One bit of code never got changed from the test server address. Opened FTP, low and behold the test server had been RECREATED by WP, just to post images in the wrong place. Technology is powerful, but not as powerful as the idiocy of its masters. Anyway. Nice to finally fix that.

this is intimate, the intimate intimates

In the past I may have intimated that I had a full grasp of the word intimate. But while making tea, some intimate part of myself intimated that this was not the case.

Seriously, it has never dawned on me that the verb “in-tim-eight” was the same exact word as the adjective and noun “in-tim-ut.” Nor had it really even flipped the switch that “intimate” (vt) means both “to make known publicly or formallyand “to communicate delicately and indirectly“. Both “to announce” and “to hint.”

Which in better times should have been mutually exclusive, but I suppose I shouldn’t be too dismissive of the ability to do both, considering I’ve been paying attention to politics. No greater verb, then, to describe the current level of political discourse, a peculiar level of preparing a speech on a topic and then refusing to say anything actually useful about said topic.

But all of this is merely attempting to add weight to what is, deep down, simply my brain obsessing over a word for a few hours. Best move along to other pastures, my intimates.

Friday, full of cold and sneezes

So Girl woke up and declared she was getting sick. Now, due to the Second Law of Hypochondriacs, I am now also feeling as though imminent discomfort is at hand.

To be fair, two days ago I reorganized my entire office.

Not entirely non-sequitur, there; I do have a proven allergy to dust, and as I was moving various boxes, gadgets, papers, &c from one end of the room to the other and back again, I was aerating vast quantities of the stuff. (Tangent: it turns out that old chestnut about dust being comprised of mostly dead skin cells from humans is a gross exaggeration, which is a bit of a relief, as I was never totally comfortable with the idea that my uncontrollable sneezing fits and blinding eye-waterings were due to me being allergic to myself. Though I do appreciate the irony of the concept.) Point being, when I have a dust attack, I often end up feeling sick for a few days, a combination of feeling dopey from antihistamines and the physical sneeze-hangover from having the histamines coursing uncontrollably in the first place.

On the other hand, more than once I’ve felt ill for days after an allergy attack, only to come to the conclusion that I was actually sick. It’s a strange trigger, these uncontrollable sneezing jags; weakens the body just enough so that it can tag some passing bug and reduce the already miserable body to utter zombiehood.

Witness the now. Here I am, 9am, it’s dark and gray and dripping outside, the house is chilly, and really all I want to do is heat up some soup, make some tea, and go back to bed with a pile of comic books. And to be fair, as I’m still very much on the part time end of things, there is nothing stopping me from doing so. Nothing save my own stubbornness, my own determination to Get Things Done, or perhaps due to the fact that there’s nobody here to make the soup for me.

I think I will have that tea, tho.

So I managed to successfully get, well, most everything up and running. It’s not pur-feck, but it’s a hell of a lot better than it was last week. So, by all means, beat on it for a while, and let me know if something breaks.

I already know comments are broken. This is more due to my completely forgetting to see whether they worked until about an hour ago. In theory, it shouldn’t be too hard to get them up and running. This wouldn’t be an issue, except that… well, it looks like the old Beehive forum might not get back up on its feet this time. I had been making noise about closing it down anyway, but I never intended to vanish it. Attempts to get the database running on a new install of the software have been un-promising. So in terms of social networking, this blog is the best we’re likely to get for the time being.

If’n you don’t count the Facebook Fan page, which has forum architecture built in, as well as photo sharing and, well, it’s in Facebook. Hardly an ideal situation, but if you knew what I had to go through just to get that page working, well, you’d feel obligated to join it, even if you never used it ever again.

But you don’t care about any of that. I can tell you that, so far as I know, season 3 will resume next Thursday as scheduled. The Jigsaw Button Packs are in production, and although we’ve had a minor packaging setback, those should be available for sale in the next couple weeks. You might have noticed the Etsy store is rather bare at the moment; in the next few days, I’ll be putting some original artwork up for sale to span the temporal gap between now and when the buttons, stickers, and Milton inaction figures are ready.

Meanwhile… thanks for sticking around. I’ll likely be trying to actually use this blog more often this time around, so throwing the link in your favorite RSS reader won’t just give you the new videos, but also incredibly fatuous rambles like this one. Sometimes there will be recipes involved.

Okay. Brain officially shutting down. Need the soft horizontal. If anyone knows a good online supplier of fountain pen ink cartridges, do let me know.

nearing completion

I am very much not a codemonkey.

I have massive gobs of respectcake for codemonkeys. To be able to read a stylesheet and know where each term refers to is barely in my grasp most days, let alone crunching new php code, which I somehow picture comes out of a peppermill. Thanks to Bill for a bit of help with the footer, even though I ended up deciding to skip most of the things he told me how to do (they involved images, and I decided to go with text).

So the merry few who see this missive should let me know of major problems. It’s a bit of a rush job, because I am now confident that this site is functional and not hideous, even if some of the links are a bit boring and the design is still wonky in places. Mostly done, sure. Anyway, leave a comment and tell me of your woes. Should have the rest of it cobbled together by the time the new episodes roll out.

edit: Proof of concept: I have just realized that I don’t have any code to support comments built in here. So… it may be a little while before anyone can make noise back at me. We’ll see how difficult it all proves to be. Selah.
